ABOUT

From the 1960s to the 1990s no other photographer has shaped the German magazine imagery as significantly as Thomas Hoepker. A staff photographer and correspondent of Stern magazine, he was among the first who obtained a special permit to travel almost freely between West and East Berlin. His realist, unprejudiced pictures of life in the East are highlights of Cold War picture journalism; his portraits of East German artists such as Anna Seghers, Stephan Heym, and Wolf Biermann are icons of intensity and nearness. For Stern, and, from the late 1970s, for Geo magazine Hoepker travelled the whole world with his camera. In this book he presents a comprehensive survey of his work of 50 years including many of his German East-West classics as well as reportage photographs from his trips to South-East Asia, Africa, the Easter Islands, the US, and Europe.
