ABOUT
Around 160,000 elderly people find themselves in nursing homes in the Netherlands. For a variety of reasons, they are no longer able to live independently. The differences among the residents are great. One is confined to bed rest while another can move around with rela-tive ease. Yet another suffers from worsening dementia. Brought on by medical issues, a lack of social contacts or financial resources, these residents only go outside an average of once a week. Therefore, the largest part of their lives takes place within the walls of the assisted-living facilities they now call home.
