ABOUT
Mitch Epstein comes from a Jewish-American family. Many of his ancestors fell victim to the Holocaust. So, it was only natural to search for traces of the Shoah in Berlin. But Epstein doesn't just focus on the "Third Reich." He depicts various eras that have been deposited on top of each other in Berlin like layers of rock. Peacefully grazing elephants in Lichtenberg; mannequins with gleaming white teeth on a billboard at Checkpoint Charlie; the Dalai Lama on a monitor at the Brandenburg Gate – Epstein reveals Berlin's penchant for the surreal and casts human pathos into complex forms.
