In contrast to his deliberately sober, but not distant photographs of his earlier series, Schmidt draws a subjective, lead-up picture of the still divided city in Weaffenruhe with atmospherically condensed, precious and contrasting black-and-white photographs of city landscapes, natural details and portraits. His technique no longer follows the means of pure documentation, but formulates the dystopian attitude to life of a generation shortly before the fall of the wall in surprising image contexts.
