ABOUT

A photographer who harbours a filial admiration for Walker Evans, is a friend of the architect Aldo Rossi and the singer Lucio Dalla, readily quotes Goethe and Shakespeare, and hums Dylan to cheer himself up, in short, a photographer who says all this deserves to be listened to and his pictures looked at.

The photographer in question is Luigi Ghirri, he was Italian and died far too young at the age of forty-nine. Ghirri wrote extensively and it was undoubtedly as much for the quality of his images as for the originality of his writing that he was a sort of moral authority in the world of Italian photography, constantly questioning the notions of landscape and territory. Thirty-one of his texts and an anthology of his images are brought together in a charming little book.
