Josef Koudelka had already designed a book with his photographs of Roma in 1968. It was supposed to be published in Czechoslovakia. But this did not happen, as the photographer had to leave the country for political reasons. A modified edition was produced in Paris: it contained a selection of sixty photographs showing Roma from eastern Slovakia. It was published in France in 1975 under the title Gitans, la fin du voyage and in the USA and became one of the most important photo books of the 20th century.

For Roma, Josef Koudelka has revised and expanded his original design. The book now contains all the photographs from Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, France and Spain taken between 1962 and 1971.
