ABOUT
The love for the small and near is in the fibres of this fragile and intimate book. From the thin 52gsm paper with its natural look and soft touch, to the Japanese binding and small size - everything about this project exudes a sensitive attention to detail. The pictures fit into a tradition of romantic nature photography, but with a subtle wink, so the whole thing never becomes clichéd. The black-and-white images, printed in duotone, give the whole a classic feel. Yet thanks in part to the paper choices, the binding and the absence of page numbering, this book also feels fresh and contemporary. Good use has been made of the Japanese binding style - with photos that regularly move on to the next page, giving the feeling that you are yourself in the middle of the landscape. In the nice image rhythm, images of different sizes alternate, from images that fill an entire spread to combinations of images that fill out the page with smaller images next to them. The printing shows printing and lithographic craftsmanship: to achieve contrast on this paper, sufficient ink must be used. This has the disadvantage that there is a chance that some images, with all their subtlety, could thereby 'clog up', a pitfall that has been skilfully avoided here. Attractive is the cover, where front and back cover form a photographic diptych and the title and author appear only on the spine. A modest plea for the gentle, vulnerable and poetic.
