(Not) Jammed was selected for the Best Dutch Book Designs 2023 and was designed by our very own Doğa Gönüllü. These are the last copies of the original first print run. We're working on released a very limited second print run soon!
What if machines can think or have emotions? Observing anachronistic machines triggered us to think if we still understand these human creations. They often act out, get stubborn and defensive, take their time, or start wailing when you ask them to work. As a collective, we want to create an appreciation for these machines and involve them in our production by giving them the space to express their personality.
(Not) Jammed, created by DuctTape Collective, started as an installation that invites visitors to interact with a dot matrix printer named "Scott" that became an active part of the production processes behind printmaking. The work facilitated a dialogue between humans and a mischievous machine, granting the viewer the role of content provider and designer while also allowing the machine to intervene.
This publication is based on the print results from the installation collected during the 3-day exhibition "Not Just A Fair" at Platform POST Arnhem. The content is a real-time documentation of the overall atmosphere of the event: the passing-by visitors and their interactions with Scott the Printer, his own interpretation of the conversation he overheard intertwined with a visualisation of his printing sounds.
