"From 1982 onwards, I decided to photograph the Italian seashores, those where I had been happy with my parents, but also those that were unknown to me, mythical destinations and towns with evocative names, Capri, Naples, Portofino, San Remo or Stromboli, for which songs had been composed or which had been used as a backdrop for films.
I realised that the particular territory of the seaside, the activity that took place on the beach in summer, was really a concentrate of Italian culture, a ritual through which its art of living was most strongly expressed."
